Changes in seismicity pattern due to the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake sequence and implications for improving the foreshock traffic-light system

Crustal deformation due to the 2016 earthquake sequence in Kumamoto, Japan, that culminated a preceding of magnitude M6.5 and subsequent M7.3 28 hours later, caused stress perturbation on around causative Futagawa-Hinagu fault zone. Monitoring changes seismicity pattern along this zone plays role understanding process before after major earthquakes. For purpose, stress-dependent laws statistical seismology can be used: Gutenberg-Richter frequency-size law Omori-Utsu aftershock-decay law. We review results obtained by using these previous studies show high near eventual epicenters earthquakes start Kumamoto sequence, it, showing decreasing trend Detailed analysis suggests aseismic slips The preslip locally reduced just prior its epicenter.
